What is a necrology? This word has two main definitions. The first is an obituary notice and the second is a list of deaths. Our Annual Necrology Report conforms more to the latter definition, a list of deaths. But whose deaths? Just as many congregations have a practice of recognizing and honoring those congregants who have passed within the previous year, the Presbytery of Geneva wishes to recognize and give thanks for all the Ruling Elders and Clergy who have passed away in the previous year. In most cases, those Ruling Elders and Clergy who passed away will not be in a currently serving capacity; they will usually be off of Session and/or retired. No matter how long ago they may have served, it is our desire to give thanks for their service and to remember their names before the Lord.
Our tradition is to incorporate the Annual Necrology Report into the worship service at our January meeting of the Presbytery of Geneva. This was done on 28 January 2023, in which we read the Annual Necrology Report listing those Ruling Elders and Clergy who passed away in 2022.
